Overview

The PK-HC08QT Starter Kit is an entry level tool which allows you to get started with the Motorola MC68HC08 family of low-cost, high-performance microcontrollers units (MCUs). The M68HC08 Family is a Complex Instruction Set Computer (CISC) with a Von Neumann architecture. All MCUs in the family use the enhanced M68HC08 central processor unit (CPU08) and are available with a variety of modules, memory sizes and types, and package types. The PK-HC08QT Starter Kit supports the new MC68HC908QT4 microcontroller (Nitron family), a sample of which is included in the package. The PK-HC08QT Starter Kit has been designed for the evaluation of the MC68HC908QT4 microcontroller and the debugging of small user applications. The PK-HC08QT Starter Kit takes advantage of the Metrowerks CodeWarrior Integrated Development Environment (which groups an Editor, Assembler, C Compiler and Debugger) and the Motorola's MON08 interface, which allows the download of the user application into the microcontroller FLASH memory. Together with CodeWarrior, PK-HC08QT provides you with everything you need to write, compile, download, in-circuit emulate and debug user code. Full-speed program execution allows you to perform hardware and software testing in real time. PK-HC08QT is connected to the host PC through a serial port. A prototyping area allows you to wire your own small application.

PK-HC08QT Features

The PK-HC08QT board has the following hardware features:
An MCU section. It contains a socketed, 8-pin MC68HC908QT4 device (in DIP package) with a Signal Pins connector to access the I/O pins of the microcontroller for expansion prototyping.
A Demo section. It features a RESET push-button, a potentiometer and a user LED. Both the potentiometer and the LED can be connected to/disconnected from the microcontroller by using the relative jumpers.
A Prototype section. You can wire here your own circuit.
A Host Interface section. It contains the circuitry needed to interface the RS-232 signals with the MON08 interface of the microcontroller.
A Power Supply section. A connector for a 9-12 V DC, 100 mA power supply is provided.
A Mode Selection section. The PK-HC08QT board can work either in Standalone mode (no host PC required) or in Host mode (the board is remotely controlled by the host PC).

CodeWarrior Integrated Development EnvironmentThe PK-HC08QT Starter Kit comes with a free version of CodeWarrior Development Studio for HC08 Microcontrollers, Special Edition. The CodeWarrior Development Studio for Motorola HC08 Microcontrollers enables you to build and deploy HC08 systems quickly and easily. This tool suite provides the capabilities required by every engineer in the development cycle, from board bring-up to firmware development to final application development. With a common, project-based, development environment reuse becomes a natural by-product as each team builds on the work already completed by the previous team. CodeWarrior Development Studio for HC08 Microcontrollers, Special Edition, includes the CodeWarrior integrated development environment (IDE); 4 KB code-size limited C compiler and C source-level debugger; macro assembler and Assembly-level debugger and FLASH programming support.
